From being pregnant to being parent

A birth doula will meet you before labor for a prenatal visit. She will make herself available from then on over the phone or by e-mail for any questions or concerns you may have. Once labor starts, she will be present from the time you call her through the first hour or two after your baby's birth. She will help you with breastfeeding if applicable and will come for a postpartum visit whenever you feel ready for it after the birth.

        Prenatal visit Prenatal visit

After you've selected me as your doula, we will meet for your prenatal visit. At that time I will assess your childbirth knowledge, address any concerns or questions you may have, and guide you through writing a birth plan as we discuss your preferences. A birth plan will primarily help the labor team (mother, partner and doula) to stay on the same page. It is also a good way for the parents to organize their questions for their caregiver ahead of time.

        Labor support Labor support

Once your labor starts, I will come to your house or to your birthing place whenever you decide you need my support. I will remain with you the whole time and will provide physical and emotional support for you and your partner by:

  • - suggesting different methods for pain management, according to your personnal preferences,
  • - encouraging you to ask your caregiver as many questions as you need to make an informed decision regarding any medical recommendations that deviate from your birth plan,
  • - being by your side, praising you and encouraging you,
  • - if necessary, suggesting different pushing positions,
  • - if your goal is to breasfeed, helping you and your baby to connect for the first time and get that first feeding off to a good start.

I will leave you once everyone is settled and enjoys each other's new company.

        Postpartum visit Postpartum visit

The postpartum visit takes place one to two weeks after the birth, at your home. This is the opportunity for us to go over the birth in detail. You might need for me to help you remember some things or just to listen to what you have to say about your childbirth experience, good or bad. It is a great time for you to process the birth and let any emotion out that you might have kept quiet until then. I can also help you with any questions or concerns you may have about breastfeeding if applicable, infant care, your own recovery, etc... Finally, I will solicit feedback from you at that time about my services.
